The 3 day detox diet

Detox diets help in removing toxins from the body. They are based on the simple fact that the body needs clean, pure and natural foods to maintain a healthy system. By doing a detox diet, we would be giving some rest to the digestive system. We reduce the intake of chemicals by eating natural,  organic and unprocessed foods. The diet helps in taking in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in their natural form which are key to detoxification. It includes high fiber foods and water which helps the body to eliminate toxins by increasing the frequency of bowel movement and urination.

We ingest many chemicals through food, water and air which get deposited throughout our cells in the body. Toxins such as pesticides, insecticides, antibiotics, hormones and other chemicals from packaged foods, household chemicals, pollution, food additives, etc are the common culprits which cause ill effects to or body. In order to get rid of these harmful substances and maintain a healthy body, people go on a detox diet.

Children and women who are pregnant or nursing should not do the detox diet. People with anemia, diabetes, autoimmune diseases,
cancer, kidney malfunction and other chronic conditions should not try this diet.

My friends and I had been talking about doing a detox diet for a while. We wanted to start it simple and small. After a lot of research and discussions, I found many wonderful recipes online. ‘Vasudhaiva kutumbakam’- The whole universe is one family!

I was talking to my grandfather today over the phone. We were discussing a story in a movie where the ‘hero’ who had just lost his parents in a war had nothing to look forward for in his life. He was depressed and was about to end his life when he had a vision. He realized that he had lost only a part of his family and that the rest of them were still alive. These were the other ‘unrelated’ people who were around him. He then started considering everyone around him as family. It was then that my grandfather told me the following Sanskrit phrase which says that the whole world should be considered as our family. Sure, we are close to our family, but we need to consider everyone and everything around us as our own.

‘ayonijah parovekthi gaNanaa laghu chetasam;

udhara charithaananthu  Vasudhaiva kutumbakam’

Roughly translated, it means those who discriminate between people saying, ‘these are my people; the rest are outsiders, are small minded; the really great who are large hearted, regard the whole world as part of their family.

This world would be a wretchedly miserable place to live in if it was full of the former category of people referred to above. Fortunately God, in his infinite kindness, has also ensured that the universe is peopled by the later category as well. In essence it is a lesson, neigh, a mandate to all of us that we should be inclusive in our nature. The presence of such people signifies intimations of the majesty of creation.

There are innumerable things of beauty which are a source of immeasurable joy. God does not stand in front of us in physical form but He has filled His creation with such numberless things of beauty and it is these things that make life really worth living.

The Gerson Therapy

The cure for cancer has been found. It was found by a man named Dr. Max Gerson. He called it the Gerson therapy. The Gerson Therapy is a natural treatment that activates the body’s extraordinary ability to heal itself through an organic, vegetarian diet, raw juices, coffee enemas and natural supplements.

With its whole-body approach to healing, the Gerson Therapy naturally re-activates your body’s magnificent ability to heal itself – with no damaging side-effects. The Gerson Therapy is a powerful, natural treatment that boosts your body’s own immune system to heal cancer, arthritis, heart disease, allergies, and many other degenerative diseases.
An abundance of nutrients from thirteen fresh, organic juices are consumed every day, providing your body with a super dose of enzymes, minerals and nutrients. These substances then break down diseased tissue in the body, while enemas aid in eliminating the lifelong buildup of toxins from the liver. (Excerpt from Gerson.org) More on Gerson and the therapy in www.Gerson.org

The main aspect of this therapy is to eat as naturally as possible. Diets should include vegetables which are always fresh and organically grown. Here is a list of desirable foods that should be eaten while in this therapy. While the list contains foods to be eaten and those to be avoided by patients in therapy, it pretty much tells the other folks who are not in therapy what to eat and what to avoid.

Cooking the Gerson way: Even though these following pointers are adopted for cooking for patients, even a healthy person should adhere to some of the aspects of the Gerson cooking method. More on cooking foods the right way…the following are just some brief excerpts from the Gerson cooking guide.
1. Vegetables should be cooked slowly and in their own water. Cooking at low temperatures helps in a minimum break down of fibers and maintains the integrity of enzymes.
2. Some vegetables like beets and potatoes should be cooked whole as the majority of the nutrients lie beneath the skin. The skin can be peeled later.
3. Spinach should not be eaten raw as it contains oxalic acid and this prevents the absorption of nutrients. However it is fine when cooked. Spinach releases large amounts of water and oxalic acid, though. This water should be discarded.
4. Foods should never be cooked on high heat. They should be cooked slowly on low heat, until well done. They should always be covered with tight fitting lids in order to prevent moisture from escaping.
5. Food should never be burned. Food can be baked in an oven as long as there is even heating and slow cooking.
6. Appliances and cookware to be avoided include microwave ovens, non-stick and aluminium cookware and pressure cookers.

Cancer and its treatment

All of us have heard about Cancer. Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by out of control cell growth. When the damaged cells divide uncontrollably throughout the body, that is when Cancer harms the body. These damaged cells form tumors in the body and these tumors can inhibit the regular functioning of the organs of the body. Cancer results when cells uncontrollably grow and do not die. This link has more information about cancer and a short video on what is cancer.

I saw an entry on face book where one of my friends had posted some really good information on Cancer and alternative cure for cancer. This was what triggered me to write the following post about alternative methods to cure cancer. There are many reasons why people and animals get cancer. It may be genetic, may be due to the use of tobacco and/or alcohol, sun and UV exposure, unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, stress, carcinogens and many more.

Common treatments for cancer include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or the combination of both radiation and chemotherapy. These treatments are well known and have been made popular by the medical institutions. Cancer treatments such as these do not promise 100% cure. They also come with several side effects which cause a lot of distress to people. I am however not here to criticize any of these treatments as they have not only given hope to cancer patients, but also have somewhat improved their living conditions.

I am a believer of natural living and I believe that human body can cure itself given some time. If it cannot, there are natural aids to help cure the body. It is about these natural remedies that I am interested in. These can be used to cure cancer and many other degenerative diseases. One such remedy is the Gerson therapy which has helped many get relieved of cancer and other major ailments. More on Gerson Therapy

Homemade Deodorant

My 1 year old daughter was sleeping in the room when all of a sudden she woke up and started to cough. She was teary eyed and her eyes had become red. She started breathing heavily and gasped for breath. I immediately took her out into the fresh air and after a couple of minutes, she got OK. I didnt know why this had happened to her. Later when I went back into the room, I realized that my husband had just used a spray deodorant. This had given her such a reaction. I didnt know what to do but decided immediately that I would stop the use of deodorants and come up with something natural. I stumbled upon some websites which had homemade recipes for deodorants, lotions, perfumes, after shaves, shaving creams, air-fresheners, lipsticks, lip balms and so many more.

I have recently started eliminating many of these ‘chemicals’ from my house. I know there is a limit up to which one can eliminate the use of chemicals at home, but this is a start. The following is a basic recipe for homemade deodorant which I borrowed from ‘Passionate homemaking’. Thanks to the recipe. It is wonderful and my husband and I have been using it for over a year now. I am so glad I found it!!

Homemade deodorant Recipe I:
Ingredients:
¼ cup baking soda
¼ cup arrowroot starch powder
5 to 6 Tbsp of coconut oil
Choice of essential oils. (I used 5 to 6 drops of lavender essential oil as it has antiseptic and anti fungal properties.)

Method:
In a bowl combine the baking soda and the starch powder. To this add the coconut oil and mix it using a spoon or by hand. You could adjust the coconut oil or the starch powder if the resulting mass becomes too thick or too thin. The mass should be solid enough to hold it, but at the same time be easy to apply. You could transfer it to a small container.

Homemade deodorant Recipe II:
If you do not want to use a stick deodorant and like the spraying type, there is this yet another recipe from ehow.com

Ingredients:
Water
Tea tree Essential Oil
Spray Bottle (You can find it in local stores or if making for friends and family and want it in bulk, MountainRoseHerbs sells them in bulk)

Method:
2 drops of tea tree oil should be added to every 1 ounce of water. So fill a small spray bottle with water and tea tree oil. Shake it and mix it well. You could let it stand for a day or two before you use it. Spray it under arms and avoid the eyes.

Crib Mattresses

There have been some controversies regarding crib mattresses for quite sometime now. I was not aware of it till recently as I did not have a baby. However once I became pregnant and started shopping for cribs and mattresses I came across many articles which talked about the toxic chemicals present in crib mattresses. ‘Healthy child’ has made a wonderful attempt of making environment friendly children products. It talks about some of the hazardous chemicals found in crib mattresses which can prove harmful to babies sleeping on them.

Problems related to crib mattresses by Healthychild
1. PVC which is found in so many items through out the house hold is found in crib mattresses too. This is considered to be one of the most toxic plastics.
2. Phthalates which are used to improve the properties of PVC are also found in the mattresses and are associated with cancer and infertility problems, to name a few.
3. The surface of the mattress contains flame retardants which are again associated with multitude of problems like liver and thyroid problems, nervous system disorders, etc.
4. Polyurethane foam which is highly flammable is used as filling in these mattresses which is detrimental to children’s health.

I know many of the household items we already have, are a part of our daily living, without which we cannot lead a comfortable life. It is however untrue that we cannot live without them. So, through many of my posts, I have made an attempt in bringing out into the light, certain findings already aware by many people. These important findings and researches done by responsible companies and health groups have been a real blessing to us. We cannot completely eliminate everything that has a negative impact on us and the surroundings immediately. It needs time. In the mean time let us at least try to reduce the use of these harmful chemicals and take active action in protecting our nature and the generations ahead of us.

What can be done?
1. Use natural and organic bedding. Crib mattresses which are chemical free will ensure that everyone has a good night’s sleep.
2. If replacing all the bedding turns out to be expensive, do it one at a time. For the time being, use cotton mattress pads or thick cotton bedspreads so that there is no direct contact between the mattress and the body.

Do you know what you are sleeping on?

After a long day’s work, we finally get to rest and cant wait to go to bed. Some of us wake up feeling fine the next day, some of us are still jittery from a bad night’s sleep and yet some of us would not have slept through out the night at all. Have we ever wondered if the mattress we are sleeping on could be one of the culprits (among many others) that is causing insomnia?

Conventional mattresses contain many different chemicals in them which are harmful to both humans and the environment. Most mattresses have potentially harmful chemicals laden in them. Polyurethane foam, a petroleum based product is one of the chemicals used in mattresses. This has been known to cause respiratory and skin problems. Another substance known as Formaldehyde is used to make adhesives which holds the mattress together. This has been attributed to cause asthma, allergies and even some types of cancer. Apart from these chemicals, the cotton used, is laden with pesticides and flame retardant chemicals which are linked to nervous system disorders.

A toxic chemical compound called Polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs) has been around for quite some time now. PBDEs or polybrominated diphenyl ethers are used to reduce the spread of fire in plastic and foam products. They are found in televisions, computers, and many other electronic equipments in the house. PBDEs mimic thyroid hormones which regulate the growth of a child’s neurological system and can alter the development of the child’s brain. After many controversies related to PBDEs, manufacturers have not been using this chemical since 2004-2005. However what is being used instead of this to meet the standards is still not known. PBDEs are likely found in mattresses, mattress pads, couches, easy chairs, foam pillows (including breastfeeding pillows), carpet padding, car seats, and other foam items manufactured before 2005. The environmental working group provides some steps to be taken which helps in reducing your exposure to these dangerous chemicals.

What can be done?
1. Use natural and organic bedding.  Mattresses which are chemical free will ensure that everyone has a good night’s sleep.
2. If replacing all the bedding turns out to be expensive, do it one at a time. For the time being, use cotton mattress pads or thick cotton bedspreads so that there is no direct contact between the mattress and the body.

Safe Toys

It is so important to make sure that our children are getting good nutrition and good food so that they can stay healthy and have excellent developmental abilities. Apart from providing them with good nutrition, I also feel that the environment they are in should be clean, healthy and free of chemicals. Everyday, they interact with so many things around the household and are in constant contact with their toys, clothes and the bed they sleep upon. Have we taken enough time to check the ingredients that are used in making these children items?

The US government does not require full testing of chemicals before a consumer product is released into the market. They do not restrict the use of these products once they are in the market. However, amongst these products, one of my main area of concerns is the toy section of the house. When I started researching about toys and the chemicals that were present in them, I came across this website called Healthystuff which had laid out elaborate research done on toys. It talked about the presence of a significant amount of lead in toys. Other dangerous chemicals apart from lead in toys were arsenic, cadmium, bromine and mercury. A major chemical used in making the toys was PVC. (PVC is detrimental to both humans and the environment. It creates major problems in its manufacture, disposal and product life. To obtain a  few other desirable properties from PVC, chemicals such as Phthalates are added to it which are again very dangerous to human health.) You could learn more about these toys here.

To know more about products which have no, low, medium or high chemical exposures go here.

What can be done?
1. Not all toys contain these dangerous chemicals. Nowadays environment friendly toys are available. Look for toys which are marked PVC-free, Lead-free and Fire-retardants free. Safbaby.com has made a wonderful attempt in listing out manufacturers who produce pvc-free, lead-free and fire retardant-free, toys. Chicco, Lego, Little Tykes are some of those responsible manufacturers who claim to produce these kinds of toys. However use your discretion.
2. Buy wood toys whenever possible.(More on eco-friendly stuff)
3. Use of alternatives like kitchen utensils such as steel or wooden spoons and cups sometimes may be fun. Kids are more than happy to play with these instead of their own toys.
4. Avoid plastic teethers. Use Safer teethers which are PVC, latex, lead, phthalate and BPA free. An even safer alternative is to use frozen vegetables or fruits or a clean wet cotton wash cloth tied into a knot. (The wash cloth worked very well for my baby)

I am thirsty!

Are we drinking enough water through out the day? Well, this has become a cliched question and anyone who knows better would always suggest that it is best to drink eight 8 ounce glasses of water in a day. As a kid, I hated drinking water at regular intervals. My dad would be mad at me whenever he saw my water bottle which would be full even at the end of the day. I wouldn’t have even opened the bottle. I understand now, how important it is to drink water.

I have now started a regular regimen of drinking enough water through out the day.. I start the day with 1 tall glass of water before eating or drinking anything else. Of course I do this after I have done my oil pulling. I measure and collect the required amount of water for my body in a glass jug and make it a point to finish it off at the end of the day. It took me almost a month to stick to this practice of finishing off the entire jug of water. I also carried a stainless steel water bottle whenever I went out.

OK, why should we drink so much water? The human body consists of anywhere between 60 to 80% of water. Here is a list of reasons why we should be drinking water.

  • Water is the primary carrier of all nutrients in the body.
  • It prevents constipation and helps digest food better.
  • Water helps in losing weight as it flushes out by products of fat breakdown.
  • It flushes out harmful toxins from the body and improves the health of the skin by moisturizing it and hydrating it.
  • Helps in relieving headache, cramps and sprains.

More on benefits of drinking water here.

About drinking water after eating…
It is said that drinking water immediately after we eat food is not a very good habit. It dilutes the stomach acid and makes it harder for the stomach to digest food. It is a good idea to wait at least for 45 minutes to an hour, before drinking water after eating.

Fasting

I had called my grandmother earlier this week to ask her for a recipe. I then asked her if she had had her dinner and she said that she was fasting that day. As a child I would always ask her and the other elders in my household about their fasting ritual. I never understood why and how a person could to go through an entire day without eating. I knew that if we did not eat well, it would cause acidity and stomach ulcers in the future. The elders in my house however told me that they fasted because God would be pleased with them and would keep them healthy. I had never realized that it was their way of cleansing their body and giving it a day’s rest. After I started doing it regularly, I began to realize how wonderful it felt to fast. I fast twice a month now and during these two days I live on water and nothing else.

So, why do people actually fast?
In India people fast twice a month such as the full moon day and on the 11th day of the lunar cycle. Fasting, proper diet, periodic oil massages, daily spiritual practices, were some of the routines established by Ayurveda for a healthy body and soul.

Fasting is done in order to give rest to the digestive organs which work tirelessly. It helps in reducing the toxicity in the body. During the time of fasting, whatever toxicity that has been accumulated over a period of time will be excreted by the body which in turn helps in purifying the blood. If fasting is not done, then there wont be any time for the body to detoxify as it has to keep working without a break to assimilate the food ingested.

Apart from the physical benefits, fasting helps in self purification and quietening the mind. It helps in gathering our thoughts together and to think about the greater good. From the modern economics point of view, the food that we do not eat on the day of fasting, will be made available for the poor. So, if we all fast at least twice a month, we will not only have a healthier body, but will also have food to to feed the hungry.

Fasting has been used as a non violent form of protest. Mahatma Gandhi used it against the British Government which shook the government to its very core. Even now back in India fasting is a form of non violent protest and draws quick attention. ‘Anna Hazare’ an Indian social activist has been fasting in order to negotiate with the Indian government to pass a new law to combat corruption. More on Anna Hazare and his fight…
